Privacy Policy
Effective Date: August 26, 2026
App: OpenTag (package com.OpenTag.opentag)
This policy explains what OpenTag, a camera app that stamps photos and videos with your GPS location, collects, how it's used, and what choices you have. It covers the Android app only.
1. Information We Collect
- Location: OpenTag uses fine and coarse GPS location to stamp captures with latitude, longitude, altitude, a street address, and an Open Location (Plus) Code. Background location permission is requested to keep your coordinates updating while the camera screen is open; it stops the moment you leave the app.
- Camera, photos, and video: Captures are written to your device's own gallery (
Pictures/OpenTag). OpenTag does not upload them anywhere. - Microphone: Audio is recorded only when you record a video with sound.
- Address lookup: OpenTag calls Android's built-in Geocoder API, which may query Google's geocoding service with coordinates only (no photo or identifying info is sent).
- Geotag log & Settings: Capture logs and app preferences are saved locally on your device and are never transmitted.
- QR/barcode scanning: If enabled, camera frames are analyzed entirely on-device.
- Advertising data: We use Google AdMob, which may collect advertising identifiers and IP addresses.
- Crash logs: OpenTag uses Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymous crash reports and stack traces.
2. How We Use Information
We process your data for the following essential purposes:
- To stamp your photos and videos with accurate location, address, and time data.
- To display your capture history securely inside the app.
- To maintain the live-location notification accurately while you're actively shooting.
- To display advertisements that help keep the app free to use.
- To diagnose app crashes and improve overall stability.
Note: We do not use your data to build advertising profiles ourselves, and we do not sell your data.
3. Where Your Data Lives & Third Parties
OpenTag stores photos, videos, geotags, and settings entirely on your device. There is no OpenTag account, no cloud sync, and no company server. The only data that leaves your device is handled by third-party infrastructure under their own privacy terms:
- Google AdMob: For banner/interstitial ads (collects Advertising ID, IP address, ad interactions).
- Firebase Crashlytics: For crash reporting (collects crash logs, stack traces, device/OS info).
- Android Geocoder: Converts coordinates to an address (processes latitude/longitude only).
4. Sharing & Required Permissions
OpenTag only shares a photo or video when you explicitly choose to via Android's native share sheet. We require the following permissions to function:
- Camera & Microphone: Essential for capturing photos and recording audio with video.
- Location (fine/coarse/background): To stamp captures and keep the foreground notification current while shooting.
- Foreground service: To run the live-location notification securely.
- Notifications: To display the ongoing location-service notification.
- Internet / network state: To load ads, report crashes, and resolve addresses.
- Storage: Required only on legacy Android (≤9) to save photos locally.
5. Your Privacy Controls
You have full control over your experience and data:
- Permissions: Revoke camera, microphone, location, or notification access anytime in Android Settings.
- Geotag log: Delete individual entries directly in the app.
- Photos and videos: Manage or delete them from your device Gallery like any other photo.
- QR detection: Toggle this off in Settings if you do not want frames analyzed.
- Uninstalling: Completely removes the local database and app settings.
- Ad personalization: Opt-out or control preferences via your device's Google Settings → Ads.
6. Additional Details
- Data Security: Logs and settings use Android's standard app sandboxing. No method of storage is completely risk-free, so keep your device's lock screen enabled.
- Children's Privacy: OpenTag is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
- International Data Transfers: Data processed by Google (for ads, geocoding, or crash reports) may be processed in countries outside your own under Google's safeguards.
