Privacy Policy

This policy explains what OpenTag, a camera app that stamps photos and videos with your GPS location, collects, how it's used, and what choices you have. It covers the Android app only.

1. Information We Collect

• Location: OpenTag uses fine and coarse GPS location to stamp captures with latitude, longitude, altitude, a street address, and an Open Location (Plus) Code. The Plus Code is calculated on your device. OpenTag uses your location only while the camera screen is open and visible. During that time, a foreground service keeps your coordinates up to date and shows them in a notification. The service stops as soon as you leave the camera screen, switch to another app, or close OpenTag. OpenTag does not request background location access and does not track your location when you are not using it.
• Camera, photos, and video: Photos are saved to your device's gallery in Pictures/OpenTag and videos in Movies/OpenTag. OpenTag does not upload them anywhere.
• Location drawn onto your captures: The location stamp is drawn into the image or video frames themselves. Depending on the template you choose, it can include your coordinates, street address, Plus Code, date and time, compass heading, a small map of the area, or a QR code that opens the location. Anyone you share a capture with can see this information.
• Microphone: Audio is recorded only when you record a video with sound.
• Compass and motion sensors: Your device's orientation sensors provide the compass heading and the level indicator. These readings are processed on your device and are not stored except as part of a stamp.
• Address lookup: OpenTag calls Android's built-in Geocoder API, which may send your coordinates to Google's geocoding service. No photo or other identifying information is sent.
• Map tiles: The mini map (used by the Advanced template) downloads map images from OpenStreetMap's tile servers. These requests reveal the general area being displayed and your device's IP address to those servers. Downloaded tiles are cached on your device.
• Geotag log: For each capture, OpenTag saves the coordinates, altitude, timestamp, address, Plus Code, and a reference to the saved file in a database on your device. This log is not sent to us.
• Settings: Your preferences (selected template, text color, grid, level, photo quality, QR detection) are saved on your device.
• QR code scanning: If you turn on QR Code Detection, camera preview frames are analyzed entirely on your device.
• Advertising data: OpenTag shows ads through Google AdMob: a banner on the camera screen and an occasional full-screen ad when you switch stamp templates. AdMob may collect your device's advertising ID, IP address, and how you interact with ads.
• Crash reports: OpenTag uses Firebase Crashlytics to collect crash reports, which include stack traces and device/OS information.

2. How We Use Information

OpenTag uses this data only to:

• Stamp your photos and videos with location, address, time, and the details your chosen template shows.
• Show your live position, address, mini map, and compass on the camera screen.
• Keep the live-location notification up to date while the camera screen is open.
• Show ads that keep the app free to use.
• Diagnose crashes and improve the app's stability.

Note: We do not build advertising profiles ourselves, and we do not sell your data.

3. Where Your Data Lives & Third Parties

OpenTag stores your photos, videos, geotag log, and settings on your device. There is no OpenTag account, no OpenTag cloud sync, and no OpenTag server. The only data that leaves your device goes to these third parties, each under its own privacy terms:

• Google AdMob: Banner and full-screen ads. Collects your advertising ID, IP address, and ad interactions. See Google's Privacy Policy.
• Firebase Crashlytics: Crash reporting. Collects crash logs, stack traces, and device/OS information. See Firebase privacy information.
• Android Geocoder (Google): Converts coordinates to an address. Receives latitude and longitude only.
• OpenStreetMap tile servers: Provide the mini map's images. Receive the requested map area and your IP address. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy.
• Android device backup: If Android backup is turned on for your Google account, Android may include OpenTag's settings and geotag log in that backup. This is controlled by your device settings, not by OpenTag.

4. Sharing & Required Permissions

OpenTag shares a photo or video only when you choose to through Android's share sheet. Likewise, it opens a location in a maps app only when you tap to do so. Remember that shared captures show whatever location details are stamped on them. OpenTag requests these permissions:

• Camera & Microphone: To take photos and record video with sound.
• Location (precise/approximate, while using the app): To stamp captures and show your live position on the camera screen. OpenTag does not request background location.
• Foreground services (location and data sync): To run the live-location service while the camera screen is open, and to finish adding the location stamp to a video after you stop recording.
• Notifications: To show the ongoing location notification and video-processing progress.
• Internet / network state: To load ads, send crash reports, look up addresses, and download map tiles.
• Storage: Only on Android 9 and older, to save captures to your gallery.

5. Your Privacy Controls

You control your data:

• Permissions: Revoke camera, microphone, location, or notification access at any time in Android Settings.
• Location service: Leaving the camera screen or switching to another app stops the live-location service and removes its notification automatically.
• What gets stamped: Choose a template that shows less information, for example one without the address, map, or QR code.
• Photos and videos: Manage or delete them in your device's gallery like any other photo or video.
• Geotag log and settings: To erase them, clear OpenTag's storage in Android Settings → Apps → OpenTag → Storage, or uninstall the app.
• QR detection: Turn it off in Settings if you don't want preview frames analyzed.
• Ad personalization: Opt out of or adjust ad personalization in your device's Google settings under Ads.

6. Additional Details

• Data Security: The geotag log and settings are protected by Android's standard app sandboxing. No storage method is completely risk-free, so keep your device's screen lock turned on.
• Children's Privacy: OpenTag is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
• International Data Transfers: Data handled by Google (ads, geocoding, crash reports) or by OpenStreetMap (map tiles) may be processed in countries other than your own, under those providers' safeguards.
