TorrentX is a free Android application that provides high-performance BitTorrent downloading and intelligent media downloading, with a focus on privacy, speed, and simplicity.
1. What TorrentX Does
TorrentX offers full BitTorrent support using a native jlibtorrent engine, intelligent media downloading powered by yt-dlp, media playback and 4K/HDR muxing via Media3/ExoPlayer and FFmpeg, sequential downloading, background execution via WorkManager and Foreground Services, and home-screen widgets for quick actions and download stats.
2. Anonymous Diagnostics & Crash Reporting
To ensure TorrentX runs smoothly and to help us quickly identify bugs in our native C++ engine, we utilize Google Firebase Crashlytics (including native/NDK crash reporting). If the app encounters a fatal error or crash, the following anonymous data is automatically collected:
- Crash Logs & Stack Traces: Information detailing exactly which line of code caused the app to fail.
- Device Diagnostics: Non-identifying device states at the time of the crash, such as device model, OS version, orientation, and available RAM/storage.
- Installation UUID: A randomly generated, anonymous identifier used solely to count how many individual devices are affected by a specific bug.
This data is strictly utilized for analytics and stability improvements. It is encrypted in transit, processed securely on Google's servers, and is never used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
3. Advertising
TorrentX is free to download and use. To help cover hosting and development costs, the app displays a small banner ad (via Google AdMob) on some screens. No full-screen, video, or rewarded ads are used.
- Before showing any ad, TorrentX uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request your consent where required by law (for example, users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland see a consent form).
- Ads may be personalized or non-personalized depending on your consent choice and region. Google and its ad partners may collect identifiers such as your advertising ID and general device/app information to serve and measure ads, as described in Google's Advertising Privacy Policy.
- We do not receive or store any of this ad-related data ourselves — it is processed directly by Google under its own privacy policy, available at policies.google.com/privacy.
- You can manage ad personalization for your Google account at any time via adssettings.google.com.
4. Information We Do NOT Collect
- No names, emails, phone numbers, or any personal identifiers.
- No cloud accounts or login systems — TorrentX does not require you to sign up or sign in.
- No browsing history or tracking of the files you download.
- No sale of any data to third parties, ever.
The only data leaving your device is the anonymous crash/diagnostic data described in Section 2, and — only while an ad is being requested and shown — the advertising data described in Section 3.
5. Technical Information Processed Locally
The following information is handled only on your device:
- Magnet links, .torrent files, and media URLs you manually add or open with TorrentX.
- Peer-to-peer connections required by the BitTorrent protocol.
- Download progress, resume data, and local settings stored in an on-device SQLite database.
- Media files you choose to access via TorrentX for playback or muxing.
Your IP address may be visible to other peers and trackers as part of normal BitTorrent operation — this is unavoidable in any torrent client.
6. Required Android Permissions & Their Purpose
- INTERNET — To connect to peers, trackers, and media servers.
- ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE / ACCESS_WIFI_STATE — To detect connectivity and enforce WiFi-Only mode.
- CHANGE_NETWORK_STATE / CHANGE_WIFI_MULTICAST_STATE — To optimize peer discovery and multicast (LSD) on local networks.
- NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES / ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK — To discover and connect to peers on your local network (LAN peer discovery), required on newer Android versions.
- READ_MEDIA_VIDEO / READ_MEDIA_AUDIO / READ_MEDIA_IMAGES / READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED / READ/WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (legacy) — To save downloaded files to your device and let you select or open existing media/torrent files.
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE — To keep downloads and media playback running reliably in the background.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS — To show download progress and status.
- RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — To optionally resume active downloads after your device restarts.
- WAKE_LOCK — To prevent the device from sleeping during active file writing.
- REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS — To ask permission to run reliably when battery optimization would otherwise pause downloads.
7. Your Privacy Controls
You have control over your privacy:
- WiFi-Only mode and speed throttling.
- Encryption modes and proxy support (SOCKS5, HTTP).
- Port randomization and peer discovery controls.
- Option to stop seeding at 100% to save bandwidth.
- Ability to revisit and change your ad consent choice, and to manage ad personalization via your Google account settings.
